Arlington, VA teen Michael Allen re-discovers the water through the 06’ CEEF Scholarship

The CEEF Newsletter returns to your mailbox with stories of courageous student athletes who are active in their communities.

In its 7th year, the Cynthia Earley Educational Foundation awards educational scholarships at The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim(GCBS) held just outside of Annapolis, MD every June.

The non-profit organization has recognized a dozen students at this event since 1999 and has awarded over $7,000 to be used for the college or trade school of their choice. The CEEF Scholarship awards $1,000 to the student who has raised the most for the GCBS Charities and participated in the 4.4 or 1 mile swims.

Michael Allen, a 17-year-old high school junior from Arlington, VA was ready to put swimming on the shelf after training and competing as a student since the age of nine. “When I finished my last meet in March, I took a break and began debating on whether to continue swimming. Despite some failures I have had competing, I decided I would continue to get up in the morning to train for the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim”.

Finishing 40th overall from over 630 entrants, he held a 24-minute pace per mile for 4.4 miles. “My mom drove me every morning to practice and made sure I got to school pretty much on time. It was an exhausting year of swimming, school, homework, and sleeping. I was forced to make use of all my spare time in school to get my work done.”

Michael trained at the Arlington Athletic Club, but began to favor open water swimming in 2003 when he entered a 2K race at Pohick Bay, VA. “I finally

realized that my passion lay with open water swimming and began focusing on long distance freestyle”.

Raising over $600 for Bay Swim Charities, Michael Allen accepts the CEEF Scholarship Award. L to R: Brian Earley, Michael Allen, Chuck Nabit, Darren Earley.

“I Know How Fortunate I am to Be Able to Compete" ___________________________________

One of the goals of the Foundation is to inspire young people to give back to their community. The entrance fee alone for the GCBS is several hundred dollars, but to win this scholarship, you must do more than the minimum.

Michael depended on an inner circle of teammates and family to compete for the scholarship this year. “To fundraise, I looked to my family and friends and most especially, the members of the Arlington Forest Swim Team. I sent an email out to my team about sponsorship and my mom said she would match any donations from my team. My dad also contributed to my fundraising”.

This was Michael’s second time in the GCBS but the first time he fundraised to win the CEEF Award. "Last year, I thought that the GCBS was just another race for athletes taking the next step. However, after meeting your family last year at the

CEEF Award ceremonies, I realized that the GCBS is my opportunity to give back to the community. I know how fortunate I am to be able to compete”.

2005 CEEF scholarship winner and Bucknell Freshman, Ally St. Claire was active again this year. Finishing close behind Michael in fundraising, Ally also finished second overall for women in the 4.4 mile swim race.
