Smith Brings Another Power Performance and Second Scholarship, Newcomer Drake Makes Big First ImpressionLa Jolla, CA – The Cynthia Earley Educational Foundation (CEEF) awarded two scholarships at the annual Great Chesapeake Bay Swim (GCBS) held on June 12th, 2011. It brings the Foundation great pride to honor and recognize the caliber of these student athletes. This year is no exception with the return of Taylor Smith, 19 of Arnold, MD. Smith won his second consecutive $1,000 scholarship by achieving the top dollar amount raised for the GCBS charities. In the water he placed second overall only behind a former Olympic swimmer in one of the most respected open water swim race in the United States. We met and welcomed a newcomer to the Cynthia Earley Scholarship who was equally impressive Ellen Drake, 18 of Cleveland Heights, OH was a close second to Taylor in fundraising and was also the number two female overall to finish in the 620 person race.
Here are some more numbers for you…these two
all-stars brought in just under $3,000 combined with Taylor raising
$1625 and Ellen $1,329. Taylor increased his donations by $1,000 over
last year and this was Ellen’s and first attempt at the scholarship. |
He has a secret weapon for fundraising in the field
as younger brother Logan assisted in knocking on doors. Logan
also competed in the 1 mile event held the same day at the GCBS.
Drake Goes For It and Takes Scholarship Back to Oberlin
Ellen Drake watched Taylor Smith receive his
scholarship at last year’s GCBS and turned to her dad Charles
Drake who said, “If you want to be in the GCBS next year,
you have to go for the scholarship”. With a smile that would
win anyone over, Ellen is grateful for her family’s support
to get her to the GCBS and added “Athletics are fun. Contributing
to the GCBS gives it a purpose…at the same time, you are
doing something for somebody else”. |
