Smith and Makhlouf Take The 2010 Cynthia Earley Scholarship
Annapolis, MD – June 13, 2010 – Taylor Smith, age 18 of Arnold, MD, and Emily Makhlouf, age 18 of Reisterstown, MD, won the $1000 and $250 scholarships respectively from the Cynthia Earley Educational Foundation (CEEF) at this year’s Great Chesapeake Bay Swim (GCBS).

Mr. Smith, competing in only his second GCBS, raised more than $600 for the GCBS charities this year. Ms. Makhlouf experienced her first GCBS event by raising $300 for the primary GCBS charities, the March of Dimes and the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

The two scholarship winners will be attending college this September as Mr. Smith enters his freshman year at Ohio Wesleyan University and Ms. Makhlouf enters her sophomore year at University of Maryland.

Both finished at the top of their age groups in the highly competitive 4.4 mile open water swim event held every year near Annapolis, MD.  Mr. Smith was involved in one of the most exciting finales in GCBS history with a four man race to the shoreline.  He took second place overall by only two seconds (1 hr. 28 min. 47 sec.) and was five seconds in front of the third place competitor, seventeen seconds in front of the fourth out of a 611 people who entered the water off Sandy Point State Park.

Ms. Makhlouf’s first attempt at the tide driven GCBS was an outstanding finish coming in fifth in her age group (female 15-19 years) and she has vowed to finish under the three hour mark for next year.  This is an excellent performance for a young woman who never competed in organized swimming but dreamed of swimming the Chesapeake growing up.
“When academics are combined with athletics, we believe we have the best you can find.  We are fortunate to have the caliber of young people such as Taylor and Emily represent the Foundation” said Brian Earley, founder of CEEF and the GCBS.

In its eleventh year, CEEF has awarded over thirteen thousand dollars to students and their families to assist in tuition and related costs to further their education.  It is supported by organizations and individuals who believe in the investment of education, endeavor and community.
