Smith Brings Another Power Performance and Second Scholarship, Newcomer Drake Makes Big First Impression

La Jolla, CA – The Cynthia Earley Educational Foundation (CEEF) awarded two scholarships at the annual Great Chesapeake Bay Swim (GCBS) held on June 12th, 2011. It brings the Foundation great pride to honor and recognize the caliber of these student athletes. This year is no exception with the return of Taylor Smith, 19 of Arnold, MD. Smith won his second consecutive $1,000 scholarship by achieving the top dollar amount raised for the GCBS charities. In the water he placed second overall only behind a former Olympic swimmer in one of the most respected open water swim race in the United States.

We met and welcomed a newcomer to the Cynthia Earley Scholarship who was equally impressive Ellen Drake, 18 of Cleveland Heights, OH was a close second to Taylor in fundraising and was also the number two female overall to finish in the 620 person race.

Here are some more numbers for you…these two all-stars brought in just under $3,000 combined with Taylor raising $1625 and Ellen $1,329. Taylor increased his donations by $1,000 over last year and this was Ellen’s and first attempt at the scholarship.

Taylor would make any parent proud as he completed his first year at Ohio Wesleyan University with a 3.2 GPA and is leaning towards political science and sports management as a major.

He has a secret weapon for fundraising in the field as younger brother Logan assisted in knocking on doors. Logan also competed in the 1 mile event held the same day at the GCBS.
Raising over two thousand dollars in two years, Taylor states how surprised he is of his success and how happy that the money raised goes to “charities that people care about”.

Drake Goes For It and Takes Scholarship Back to Oberlin

Ellen Drake watched Taylor Smith receive his scholarship at last year’s GCBS and turned to her dad Charles Drake who said, “If you want to be in the GCBS next year, you have to go for the scholarship”. With a smile that would win anyone over, Ellen is grateful for her family’s support to get her to the GCBS and added “Athletics are fun. Contributing to the GCBS gives it a purpose…at the same time, you are doing something for somebody else”.

No surprise that she got a call from Swim Coach Mark Fino at Oberlin College who recruited her to the swim team. Oberlin is a Division III school with no monetary assistance for athletes. Her $500 scholarship will go to much needed textbooks as she embarks on her freshman year in college.

On the academics side, she has not officially declared a major but is interested in biology and bio chemistry. Her goal is to be in medical research and is working as a lab tech at the Infectious Disease Research Lab, Veterans Affairs Hospital in Cleveland, OH.

CEEF is honored by Buchanan & Edwards as Presenting Sponsor

CEEF was able to increase the scholarships this year to a total of $1,500 because of the support of people and organizations around the country who share the same passion for the promise of education for young people. A company sharing that belief is Buchanan & Edwards (B&E), the Arlington, VA based information technology and professional services consulting firm who was the Presenting Sponsor for the 2011 Cynthia Earley Scholarship.
Brian Karlisch, CEO was on hand to personally congratulate Taylor and Ellen on their incredible performance both in and out of the water. “Investing in the leaders of tomorrow will help all us enjoy a more prosperous and secure future” Brian stated. His company serves the department of state and is a veteran owned small business. He got to hear firsthand what it is like to take on the mighty tides and chop of the Chesapeake.
